MBSalumni Annual Dinner 2010 - An Evening to Remember! PDF Print E-mail

By Lai Wing Fatt (MBSKL alumnus, 1957 – 1969)

It is my pleasure to write about the MBSalumni Annual Dinner 2010 held on the 26th of June 2010, at the One World Hotel in Bandar Utama.

The programme was immaculately planned. The pre-dinner drinks at the foyer provided the opportunity for everyone to mingle before the dinner started. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to see Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon and his lovely wife, Fumiyo, casually mingling with the old boys and girls and exchanging stories of the good old days. Colin Liew's name was brought up as he was in the same year as Tan Sri. Apparently, Fumiyo is a lurker in the MBS Loop and she enjoys the banter about the 1963 school concert where she was involved, together with Leong Sik Hoong and others. Datuk Lee Tak Lum, the man who chaired the fund-raising campaign for the Yong Chee Seng Wing, was there with his lovely wife too.

In his speech, Alumni President Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan kept the dinner's main objectives on track. He remarked that this gathering of the MBS alumni was to enjoy good fellowship, honour outstanding teachers, maintain ties with both the MBS primary and secondary schools and to launch the new MBSalumni website. Mr Wong Chee Kheon, the Principal of the Methodist Boys’ Secondary School, and Ms Susie Khor, the Headmistress of the Primary School, gave short speeches in line with the theme "The Bridge between School and Life.”

Puan Sri Soong and the late Liu Kwai Choong were recipients of MBSalumni awards conferred at the dinner; the former was recognised as a Honorary Member of the Year 2010 (given to teachers of long service to MBSKL but not students of the school) and the latter was given a Lifetime Contribution Award for his outstanding contribution to the Association. Wan Heng Yuen, who is related to Puan Sri Soong, received the award on her behalf while Kwai Choong's eldest son received on his family's behalf. The MC, Allan Yap, read out excerpts from Puan Sri Soong's 8 page hand-written acceptance speech as her health does not permit her to be present, while Kwai Choong's eldest son gave a moving speech whilst accepting the award. The Royal Selangor Pewter plaque awarded to Puan Sri Soong was donated by Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon.

Allan Yap did a fantastic job as the MC with his suave and humorous presence, in addition to sponsoring the well designed MBS cake through his company, Just Heavenly.

Generous donations of beer, wine and whisky helped keep spirits up for the 200 guests throughout the night. The MBS school song was sung over and over again at the various tables even after it was sung before the dinner formally began.

Towards the end of the night, it was fitting that the attractive prizes donated by well-wishers for the lucky draw were won by alumni from the various years. The 40-inch Samsung TV grand prize was won by a 1988 alumnus, while Lee Yoke Meng of the Class of 1974 won the second prize of two AirAsia tickets to Bali, and the Apple iPod Touch third prize went to another alumnus who left school in the early 70’s. Other winners were from Class of 1967, Class of 1989, Class of 1993 and so on. One of the winners was the prettiest lady prefect in Jonson Chong's year.

In closing, the poem written specially by me for the dinner was read out by Jonson towards the end of the dinner. It is produced below for sharing.

Bridge between School and Life

A bridge between school and life

Role played by the alumni
When schoolmates come together
Keen to meet one another

Students leave to build careers

Recall stories they hold dear
Sms, email and twit
Help keep old memories sweet

School events need our support

Awards for studies and sports
Funds we raise along the way
The principal get’s his say

Be it speech day or sports day

Working day or holiday
Alumni members will help
Guide keen students step by step
