Book tells of how the late Gill lived a life to serve the community PDF Print E-mail

Fitting tribute: Author Nikki Lagun and Puan Sri Harwant Kaur, the late Tan Sri G.S.Gill’s widow, taking a look at the biography of G.S.Gill yesterday. — AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: The noise from the dhol drums was deafening.

Yet, it provided a fitting end to the launching of a book on the late Tan Sri Datuk G.S. Gill – a quiet and simple man, who made the biggest noise as the top provider of sports equipment for many decades.

The man who brought Adidas to Malaysia passed away last year, but not before leaving a lasting legacy.

And it’s only fitting too that his colourful life – all his contributions, perseverances and sacrifices – has been beautifully penned by Nikki Lugun in a book called “A Life Lived to Serve”.

More than 200 family members and guests attended the launch of the book by Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar at a leading hotel yesterday.

Tunku Imran admitted to having fond memories of the late Gill – an avid sportsman who also held many positions in sports associations, including as president of the Malaysian Cycling Association in 1961.

“He was the pioneer in the business of sports equipment. Many former athletes bought their equipment from his small shop back then,” said Tunku Imran.

That small shop now stands tall as a 10-storey Wisma Harwant, named after his wife, at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and is run by his children and grandchildren.

“His was a story of great service. He was not only involved in business, but he also served the people through charity work. He was a lifetime Rotarian,” said Tunku Imran.

“His was also a story of great hope. He showed people how to dream big, how to make it big in business despite all the challenges and he played part in the development of sports and nation-building. He was a caring man.

“It’s a book that needed to be written and read by many. His life was an inspiration and will continue to be.”

When Gill’s niece Nikki was asked about the highlights of her book, the Lim Kok Wing communications manager said: “Every chapter of the book is special. I discovered more about him ... he was a man with a big heart.”

Gill’s family donated RM10,000 to Pertubuhan Komuniti Kasih Selangor (for orang asli) yesterday.
